Flirting with God?

“How much do you think I can get away with and still be saved?”
That statement was made during a spoken word presentation titled “I’ll wait for you”. It’s on YouTube if you’d like to watch it. Permit me to be a little bit more religious in my writing today. I felt the need to blog about this because we are starting to mix things up.
Many of us today, practice what I call ” selective religion”. Let me explain that.
Sometimes last year, I became very inconsistent with going to church. My friends would ask why and I had an answer prepared for them: “going to church regularly does not make me any less of a Christian than you are, it’s the thought and motive that counts”
Well, I had my reasons for coming to these conclusions and I guess I was right to an extent. I mean, a lot of people go to church for reasons other than to serve God.
You see, by giving them this reply I was able to erase any form of guilt that came with the fact that I was back sliding. I was practicing “selective Christianity”. Okay yeah, the bible doesn’t specifically say “Your free ticket to heaven is by going to church” but it sure says: “Love The Lord your God with all your heart”. When you really love someone, you want to do what makes them happy, you want to be present at every gathering that has to do with them right ? So me going to church shouldn’t be based on other people’s behavior but on my relationship with God.
A number of us try to play smart. We decide to twist the rules in ways that are most comfortable for us. Sometimes I wonder if there’s another bible somewhere cos even an armed robber would quote a bible passage to justify his “profession”.
I want us to note that, there’s a huge difference between being genuinely ignorant and intentionally looking the other way. In other words, some people do not know at all while some just pretend they don’t. You grab?
I was talking to someone few months back and I was shocked at my discovery. She went : “I’d just have fun right now and when I’m ready to die I’ll ask God for forgiveness so I don’t go to hell”. Really? You now get an alert on your phone when Bros death is on his way? God is really merciful sha. That’s like saying you’re a vegetarian that only eats chicken.
Now let’s clear it up. You’re either In or out. There’s no such thing as a “partial Christian” or “ceremonial christian”.
Fine, we are all sinners and we fall short of God’s glory every now and then. But using your hand to cover a part of the bible because it goes against your actions or reconstructing the meaning of a scripture doesn’t only leave you in a dangerous spot but also renders you more vulnerable. It presents us as being cunning and I don’t think God is a fan of that.
The world is filled with so many temptations to keep us from seeing what is right and trust me, it gets very confusing what direction to go. But you guys gotta agree with me that we most often CHOOSE to accept a status quo of “everyone is doing it” Let’s stop deceiving ourselves and acknowledge the fact that there are JUST two sides-God’s and the devil’s. To be honest, you can only be in one place at a time.
To everyone working to fuel their religious beliefs, if what you really want in your heart is to be devoted to God, then ask for grace to build up the confidence to stand. Don’t worry you don’t have to get it once, God is always there to pick you every time you fall as long as you’re willing to let him. You are going to make numerous mistakes but you know what’s going to help you ? Accepting that they’re mistakes and be ready to learn from them. Even Jesus knows it’s not easy, he was once in the world.

I don’t want to make this post too lengthy by putting everything I have to say about this topic but I hope to have another post relating to this.

Please feel free to drop your comments; let’s share opinions and would you be a doll by passing the link on for people to read 🙂

Moyo! A very nice one yet again! I really do love your use of english.
Relating to the topic, I do agree with you. We all are now fund of using ‘language’ and ‘logic’ to interpret or adjust situations to our own taste. Like Moyo mentioned, we all can’t be perfect and we’ll definitely make mistakes. But we definitely have to stop CHOOSING when and what part of our religion to follow. Like moyo also said, ‘you are either IN or OUT’. And the earlier we learn to live with that, the better for us all. May God make things easy for us, amen. God bless you Moyo!

Quite true! Many people today do not know why they go to church.. Most people just go because … Well..that was how they were brought up. You rightly stated that knowing your stance matters. Unfortunately most of us are victims of the attractive yet unprofitable “selective christianity”. Atta girl!!!
